Body Checking/Non-Body Checking – Tiered Community Programs:

Body Checking is expected to continue as it did in the prior seasons at Tiers 1 to 3. Players who are skilled enough to play at these levels and choose to participate in body-checking hockey will be placed in these tiers.

Non-body checking is also expected to continue as in prior seasons at Tiers 1 to 3. Players who do not want to play in body-checking hockey will have the option to identify themselves during registration.  If a player is identified as such, he or she will not be placed in skate groups that will have body checking.

SWZ anticipates offering body checking clinics this summer/fall in preparation for evaluations.

Note that players who are willing to participate in evaluations and league play with body checking are not guaranteed placement on a body checking team.

Recreational Hockey League for U15, U18 and U21:

The EFHL Recreation Hockey League is intended for players who want to play hockey but not commit to the more involved practice and game schedules of the community hockey program.

Some of the key founding principles of this program are as follows:

  • Focus on fun and participation more so than development
  • Playing with family and friends
  • Less time commitment - 18 games, no practices
  • Minimize travel – playing closer to home as much as possible
  • Lower fees – fees are set by the league with no need for team cash calls
  • More consistent scheduling

More details on the recreational league can be found on the Hockey Edmonton website.

Registration is now open from June 1 to Sept 30 for the Rec League.  Fees TBD.  Link to register

Registration Requirements for Parents of New Players

Hockey Alberta requires at least one parent from each hockey family complete the Respect in Sport (RIS) Parents Course to have a child play organized hockey.

Respect in Sport Parent course.  The RIS program is being phased out by Hockey Alberta and Hockey Canada. Hockey Alberta has info on their website regarding the new Program The Shift Forward. The Shift Forward is focused on transformational change on how we approach training to achieve creating a safe and welcoming environment and empowering those who engage in the game to manage unhealthy behaviours. The program will cover a variety of topics focused on shifting hockey’s culture forward. For the 2026-27 season, the modules within the program will cover the following themes: hockey culture, being an active bystander, how to have crucial conversations, autonomy, individual rights, grooming and consent.

Please check your current course to see if it has expired.  It appears all valid RIS will still be accepted but if your course has expired, we recommend taking the clinic after June 1. If taken before June 1, you may lose a year of certification as it would include 2025-26.

This also applies to Team Officials (Coach, Asst. Coach, Trainer, etc.).  Please see their website here The Shift Forward Program- Coach
